1.How long have you been involved with the Open Door?

I have been involved with The Open Door Centre for 8 months, during this time I have dedicated my free time to help as much as I can.

2. What made you want to get involved with the Open Door?

I heard about The Open Door though a leaflet, which I had kept for a year before actually phoning to hopefully become a volunteer. Now I don’t have a clue why I was so nervous about contacting them as everyone was/is so lovely, friendly and compassionate. The most important thing why I wanted to volunteer, which was to wanting to give back to my community due to personal experiences. I have a passion for helping others, especially those who are struggling with their mental health.

3.       What is the best thing about being a member of the team?

The best thing about being a part of the centre, is knowing that you are hopefully making a difference to members by helping them feel better. I also love how much confidence it has given me to meet and talk to other people that we come in contact with.

4.       What do you like to do outside of the centre?

Outside the centre, I like to go to the gym and lift weights. I also like to be creative in the kitchen and make up my own recipes. I like to take time out of my day to do things for myself that I enjoy and love finding balance within work, college and a social life. This is extremely important to help you feel good.

5.       What makes a good member of the Open Door team?

A good member of the team would be simply listening, being compassionate, empathetic and showing you can help make a difference to a members life, by simply caring. It’s also showing you understand and are there to guide them though the creative therapeutic support with hope.

6.       One tip for feeling good…

Learning self care, and doing things for you is key to hopefully feeling better and good about yourself. Do things that you enjoy and treat yourself how you would treat a friend, with respect and love. This can be difficult to do so, but with practice you can crack it.
